Information Interview Scripting
Thank you very much for agreeing to meet with me. (climate setting, find common ground -be approachable and build rapid rapport)

The Script:

I am conducting a series of information interviews to support my market research in your sector (or say organization if appropriate)

I am interested in completing this research by collecting key data, asking you a number of questions (long pause) and seeking your advice- Long pause

May I start? Do you mind if I take a few notes (legitimizes your use of questions and allows you to review them)

Can I learn more about your personal background?

Is there a particular prerequisite that you required in order to pursue your own career path here?

Do you feel that your educational background did make a difference or placed you at an advantage in your career position?

Could you please give me a brief description of your position and describe that daily activities and responsibilities in which your job entails? (only if appropriate)


What skills do you feel you use on a regular basis, in your career, and in this field?

Who, in your opinion are the industry leaders?

What are some of the challenges that your sector faces today?

How are the current economic conditions affecting your industry?

(Show your resume) After quickly reviewing my resume, what abilities or background do you feel I have that might be of value to your industry?

What do you feel are the next major steps I should take to establish myself?

Who else should I talk to?

May I mention your name when I contact this person?

Closing Statement:

The type of work that you are involved in interests me greatly. My skills, values and experience have all led me to this path and I am very interested in researching it more thoroughly.

Thank you again for your time, would you like me to keep you posted on my research?
